Haridwar hosting the Purna Kumbhmela from Makar Sankranti (14th January 2010) to Shakh Purnima Snan (28th April 2010).Kumbmela is a mass Hindu pilgrimage. It occurs after every twelve years and rotates among four locations: Prayag (Allahabad) at the confluence of the Ganga and Yamuna and mythical Saraswati river, Haridwar along the Ganga river, Ujjain along the Kshipra river and Nashik along the Godavari river.
The Ardh Kumbh Mela is celebrated every six years at Haridwar and Prayag, while the Purna (complete) Kumbh takes place at four places Prayag (Allahabad),Haridwar,Ujjain,and Nashik after every twelve years. Over 45 days beginning in January 2007, more than 17 million Hindu pilgrims took part in the Ardh Kumbh Mela at Prayag, and on January 15, the most auspicious day of the festival of Makar Sankranti, more than 5 million participated. The Maha Kumbh Mela (‘Great’ Kumbh Mela) which comes after 12 ‘Purna Kumbh Melas’ which is after every 144 years is also held at Allahabad. The 2001, Maha Kumbh Mela was attended by around 60 million people, making it the largest gathering anywhere in the world.

Special trains

The train (0456-0455) would run from Amritsar at 3.40 pm and reach Haridwar at 11.50 pm on February 11, March 14 and 15. Stopping over at Beas, Jalandhar city, Ludhiana, Ambala Cantt and Saharanpur stations. Similarly, on its way back, it would run on February 12, March 15 and 16 and would have the general coaches. Train plying between Jammu at 2.50 pm and reaching Haridwar at 4.40 am. (0459/460), would run on similar dates.From Haridwar at 9.20 pm and reach Jammu at 8.45 pm. The train would stop at Kathua, Chakki Bank, Tanda Urma, Jalandhar Cantt, Ludhiana, Ambala Cantt, Saharanpur, Roorkee and Jawalapur stations with sleeper and general coaches.

By Road - Haridwar lies on the National Highway no. 45 and the distances in km from some cities are Delhi-214, Agra-386, Ambala-168, Badrinath-325, Dehradun-52, Kedarnath-250, Saharanpur-81, Nainital-386. There are regular buses from Delhi in every 30 minutes. You can take the Delhi Transport Corporation(DTC) or private deluxe coaches.
