Trimbakeshwar Shiva Temple is an ancient Hindu temple in the town of Trimbak, in the Nashik District of Maharashtra, India, 28 km from the city of Nashik. It is devoted to Lord Shiva and is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas.
History of the Trimbakeshwar or Thriyambakeshwar Shiva Temple
500 years back built a city which later on became famous as Trimbakeshwar. In the period of the Peshwas rule Nana Saheb Peshwa had instructed to construct the Trimbakeshwar temple and developed as a beautiful the city of Trimbakeshwar.
Trimbakeshwar Shiva Temple Location
There is a mountain named the Brihmagiri Mountain 18 K.M. from the city of Nasik in the Nasik district. This is one of the parts of the Sahayadri Vallies. The city of Trimbakeshwar is located in the bottom of this mountain. This is a beautiful natural place with the cold weather as it is situated 3000 ft. above from the sea.
The entire black stone temple is known for its attractive architecture and sculpture and is at the foothills of a mountain called Brahmagiri. Three sources of the Godavari start off from the Brahmagiri Mountain. Introduction of the holy place Shri Trimbakeshwar.
Trimbakeshwar Shiva Temple Features
Trimbakeshwar temple is a religious center having one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. The extraordinary feature of the Jyotirlinga located here is its three faces embodying Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu and Lord Rudra (Lord Shiva). Due to excessive use of water, the Linga has started to wear away. The Linga’s at Trimbakeshwar are covered by a jeweled crown which is placed over the Gold Mask of Tridev (Brahma Vishnu Mahesh). The crown is said to be from the age of Pandavs and consists of diamonds, emeralds, and many precious stones. The crown is displayed every Monday from 4-5 pm (Shiva).All other Jyotirlingas have Shiva as the main idol. The timings of the temple is 5.30am to 9.00pm in Trimbakeshwar temple.
About River Godavari
It is located at the source of the Godavari River, the longest river in peninsular India. The Godavari River, which is considered Holy River within Hinduism, originates from Bramhagiri Mountains and meets the sea near Rajahmudry. Kusavarta, a kund is considered the symbolic origin of the river Godavari, and revered by Hindus as a sacred bathing place. It is located at the source of the Godavari River, the longest river in peninsular India. The Godavari River, which is considered sacred within Hinduism, originates from Bramhagiri Mountains and meets the sea near Rajahmudry. Kusavarta, a kund is considered the symbolic origin of the river Godavari, and revered by Hindus as a sacred bathing place.
This temple is on top of the Neel mountain. All goddesses (Matamba, Renuka, Mananmba) came here to see ‘Parashuram’ when he was performing penance (tapas). After his penance he requested all goddesses to stay there and the temple was formed for these goddesses. There’s a myth that God Dattatrya too was born here.
The puja’s which held in Trimbakeshwar Shiva Temple
This place is famous for lots of religious rituals (vidhis). Narayan Nagbali, Kalsarpa Shanti, Tripindi vidhi are done here. Narayan Nagbali puja is performed at Trimbakeshwar only. This puja is performed in three days. This puja is performed on special dates. Some days are not suitable to perform this puja. This puja is performed for many reasons like to cure an illness, going through bad times, killing a Snake (Nag), childless couples, financial crisis or you want to perform some religious puja to have everything.
About Transportation
There are two different routes to get to here. From Nasik to Trimbakeshwar, it is only 18 K.M. This route was built by the help of Shri Kashi Nath Dhate in A.D. 871. One can easily get a mode of transport from here every hour. The other easy route is the Igatpuri – Trimbakeshwar route. This route is 28 K.M. long not like the Nasik -Trimbakeshwar road. Only some particular and pre-planned and certain modes of transport are available over here.
For the visitors coming from the North the Nasik-Trimbakeshwar route is the better one and more comfortable. The Municipal Corporation was established in Trimbakeshwar in 1866 A.D. The corporation is serving and taking care of the devotees and tourists for 120 years. The corporation has cleansed, beautified and extended the important roads for the comfort of the visitors. The unforgettable establishment of the Phadanvees of the Holkars and the Peshawas are very much elaborate and preserved.
